More than a third of bosses find staff overclaim expenses

IT IS IMPORTANT FOR businesses that want to keep control of costs to scrutinise expense claims forms, a survey conducted by insurance company Premierline Direct (www.premierlinedirect.co.uk) has found.

While 84% of businesses took great care when it came to expenses, 37% of bosses had their attention repaid by finding instances where employees had claimed for money they had not spent, additional mileage they didn’t travel or unnecessary or excessive costs.

Although firms are rightly scrupulous about monitoring expenses, 20% businesses are particularly generous in what they allow employees to claim, with 20% permitting clothing claims, 21% allowing insurance claims and 15% allowing medical care. Twenty per cent of firms allows costs for staff parties, and more than half will pay for alcohol when employees are entertaining clients.

In addition, more than half allow staff to claim for professional membership, 63% will reimburse for training and 60% will pay for utilities, internet and home office equipment, which enable staff to work from home.
