haulage very seriously. However, once a week our quirky correspondent, the Hawk, steps off his perch to take a humorous look at the industry to keep us all sane. If you have any off-heat yarns that illustrate the stranger, or sillier, side of the business, he'd like to hear from you. As a softhearted old bird, he's also happy to publicise charitable works— and is always interested in events for the vintage vehicles he drove as a fledgling. Drop the Hawk a line at Commercial Motor, Bird's Eye View, Rm H203, Quadrant House, The Quadrant, Sutton, Surrey SM2 SAS, or fax him on 0181 652 8969.

Super woman

ime was when damsels in distress needed saving; these days the damsels are doing the rescuing. Delivery driver Sue Paracline of Stowmarket snatched a family to safety recently. Sue, 20, was on her round for employer Motorspares in the Mildenhall area when she came across a car that appeared to have driven into the verge. The shocked driver, Elaine Rezzonico, came running towards Sue, pointing to Justin, eight, Melody, seven and Connor, three, who were in the car. Sue says: "I noticed smoke coming From the bonnet. We grabbed the children, bundled them into the back of the van and drove off up the road. We hadn't gone more than about 100 metres when there were two or three loud bangs and the car burst into flames."
