Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The improvement in sales of new double-deckers reported in last week's issue looks set to continue with another big order, this time from Nottingham City Transport.

In July Nottingham ordered ten mid-engined Lion doubledecker chassis from Leyland Bus (CM 16-22 July): the company has now ordered a further 15 chassis from Volvo.

All 25 chassis will be fitted with double-deck bodywork by East Lanes Coach Builders. The vehicles, together worth £2 million, will be acquired on a lease.

Nottingham City Transport has specified two access doors for the Volvos while the Leylands will be fitted with combined entry and exit doors and will be fitted out to semi-coach specification to suit private hire work.

Nottingham, unlike many bus companies, has largely avoided the use of minibuses. Engineering manager John Lowrie says the company prefers double-deckers for much of its work because of the large number of passengers it carries. Only 16 25-seat minibuses are operated by Nottingham. The first of the new-double deckers will go into service with Nottingham before the end of the year.
