• MAN has developed a fivecylinder, 191kW (260hp) engine with compact dimensions, low weight and good fuel consumption which is likely to have special appeal for British operators.
The D2865LF is a turbocharged and air-to-air charge-cooled five-cylinder derivative of the six-cylinder, 12-litre 02866 which is used in top weight MAN tractive units.
The five-cylinder, 10-litre engine's dry weight is 740kg — nearly 100kg lighter than the D2866, and even lighter than Cummins' 10-litre engine. MAN claims a minimum specific fuel consumption for the D2865LF of 195g/kW/h, which suggests that with the right gearing, its on-the-road fuel economy at 30-35 tonnes could be excellent. Its maximum torque is a relatively modest 1,100Nm (8111bft), between 1,000 and 1,400rpm.
The first right-hand-drive F90 MAN tractive unit powered by the new fivecylinder engine is likely to become available here next July, to be closely followed by a new eight-wheeler model with the same engine.
