unusual 38-tonne balker to work carrying 25-tonne loads of potatoes. The arctic combination consists of an 208kW (278hp) Cummins L-10-powered Seddon Atkinson twin steer 3-11, coupled to a 9.1m tri-axle skeletal trailer carrying a demountable 10m insulated container with a tapered floor and an electricallydriven container. Mason collects the loaded, unaccompaniedtrailer from Channel and East Coast ports for delivery to crisp and chip makers throughout the UK. The short trailer saves on ferry charges and the 3+3 artic combination reduces road tax from the 38-tonne maximum rate of .3,100 to £1,240. The twin-steer 3-11 is expected to cover 2,400km a week working up to seven days at a time.
