GREATER Manchester transport strategy committee is proposing to ban the indiscriminate parking of heavy lorries.
Under the plan, heavy lorries would have to use designated routes and roads that should not be used would be indicated. Overnight parking would be prohibited except at nominated sites.
The committee has identified 89 places within the urban core where vehicles of over 3.5 tonne must be left between 9pm and lam. Draft orders are to be prepared, while district councils are asked for their views.
A report to the committee by county engineer Eddie Naylor revealed that in one night 1,744 vehicles were parked on streets in the county.
Signs and a lorry driver information map are being prepared and the provision of double-glazing for some residents is being considered.
