MAKING ITS debut at Earls Court in September (as forecast by CM July 16) is a double-drive six-wheeler from Scania.

This will be a completely new chassis designed specifically for the UK tipper and mixer market. It is fitted with a four-spring bogie consisting of two spiral bevel single-reduction axles with air-operated inter-axle and cross-axle differential locks.

The bogie is plated to 18.3 tonnes (18 tons) while the front axle is plated at 6.1 tonnes (6 tons). The calculated kerb weight is 7 tons giving a body and payload potential of approximately 17 tons for on road use at 24 tons gvw. The bogie axle spread is quoted at 1.36m (4ft 51/2in).

Rather surprisingly only one wheelbase is available at 3.8m (I2ft 6in) — the Scania definition of wheelbase is from the front axle to the loading rear, axle. This was because Scania felt that this would be the most popular wheelbase. But there is every indication that additional wheelbase options will be available later.

The engine is the familiar DS8 turbocharged unit of 7.79 litres (475 cu in) capacity which produces 153kW (205 bhp) at 2,400 rpm with 695NM (513 Mt) of torque at 1,400 rpm — both to BS AU141a. This gives the truck a power to weight ratio of around 6.2kW/tonne (8.5bhp/ ton). The gearbox is again a familiar component — the 10-speed synchromesh GS760. The 6 x 4 Scania will be available to dealers immediately after the Earls Court Show. Depending on the sales performance in the UK it may well be made available elsewhere in Europe in the future.

The frame of the LBT 86 is the same as that used on t bonneted LS 111 and LS 1 models (not available in t UK) which could account party for the relatively hi kerb weight of the new Scan The price? In chassis cab foi £15,997.
