Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

T1-US week's prizewinner is Mr. N. Yates, of Accrington, Lancs. He says a lot of valuable time can be spent tracing the source of trouble which leads to air locking on a diesel engine. In his experience the trouble is often in the pick-up side of the lift pump. To check the lift pump itself and pipes to the fuel tank he has adapted an ordinary vacuum gauge. various unions and so on. The pipe is disconnected from the pick-up

pipe in the fuel tank and the gauge connected; the hand primer on the lift pump is then operated and will give a reading on the gauge.

If the reading fails, there is a leak in the system. The gauge is then connected at the next union nearer the lift pump If the reading on the gauge holds after operating the lift pump, it can he assumed that the length of fuel line previously tested is sucking in air.
