A FAMILY business which has
rls operated bus services in West Cumberland for 35 years appeared before the Northern Traffic Commissioners at Carlisle on Monday to give reasons why their licence should not be withdrawn. The Commissioners suspended two of the firm's buses for two months.
Previous Convictions The company. H. and L Moffat, who operate from Cleator Moor, had previously been convicted for several traffic offences at Viihitehaven in October, 1963. They were fined £2 10s. on each of two charges of operating vehicles without a road service licence. At Workington in January this year they were fined £3 on each charge for using a public service vehicle without the appropriate licence and for using a vehicle without a road service licence. In March this year, at Whitehaven, they were fined £10 on charges of having no road service licence and overloading a vehicle.
Mr. Harold Moffat. the 65-year-old senior partner in the firm, said the offence of having no service licence was "a pure matter of oversight ". He added that his daughter was to blame because, as secretary of the firm, she should have ensured that the licence was properly in force.
Mr. J. A. T. Hanlon, chairman of the Commissioners, warned that if the offences were committed again the licence would he taken away. He added: "We warn all other operators of road service vehicles that they must apply properly for their licences."
