QTARTING on September 5, Crosville

Motor ServiceS Ltd. will run limitedstop services between Chester and Caernarvon, 70 miles apart, along the North Wales coast. The fares will be Ss. lid, single and I4s. lid, return.

At a North West hearing at Chester on Tuesday, there was no opposition from British Railways, who run a dayreturn service between the two towns at a fare of 21s. But the chairman of the NUR No. 1 branch at Llandudno Junction, Mr. Norman Walker, was present to say that railwaymen along the coast were "disgusted " with BR's attitude.

The proposed service was neither necessary nor desirable, he said. Crosvitle had failed to produce any evidence of demand. In public transport there was no room for direct competition for an ever-decreasing volume of traffic. The railways were trying to bring in a service which would pay on the North Wales Coast. At present these services were losing £750,000 a year. Mr. D. 0. Diamond. for Crosville, said they were trying to provide a better service for existing traffic. British Railways should know better than Mr. Walker whether they should have objected or not. "I am sure they would have objected had they felt that Crosville intended to steal their passengers ", Mr. Diamond said. "The company has been criticized in the past on the grounds that it does not exercise sufficient economy. This is one way in which it is trying to do that." Chairman of the Traffic Commissioners., Mr. C. R. Hodgson, said the British Railways Board represented not only the railways but also the employees. The absence of opposition had been noted. The Commissioners thought the Crosville scheme was an excellefrt one.
