ANOTHER pre-nationalization haulage concern in London has returned to the field with the purchase of a transport unit. Guest Carriers (Hackney), Ltd., is the new title of a company, known before their acquisition by the British Transport Commission as Guest,

Wood and Ling, Ltd. Mr. W. A. Guest, a director of the new company and late manager of the Pickfords new-furniture service depot in Anton Street, Hackney, has been successful with his tender for the depot (formerly owned by Guest, Wood and Ling) and 10 vehicles. In Yorkshire, J. Forman, Ltd., Jesmond, have bought 20 Special Traffics vehicles, mostly tankers.

NORTHERN AREA Six 14-ton lorries have been taken over from the Gateshead Group of B.R.S. by McPhee's (Newcastle), Ltd., Ford Street, Newcastle upon Tyne. They comprise three Maudslay, two E.R.F. and an Atkinson. A regular service to south Yorkshire is to be operated.

A large number of new pnrchases is revealed in the current issue of Applications and Decisions for the North-Western Traffic Area.

Woolnough Transport, Ltd., 55 Chorley Road, Swinton, have assigned one vehicle (31 tons) to Postles Transport Co., Ltd., 14 Beeston Street, Castle, Northwich, and Postles have assigned one (4 tons) to Woolnough. The vehicle of 31 tons unladen has been replaced by one of 3 tons.

Cusick (Oldham), Ltd., have made over yet another vehicle (5 tons), this time to F. Fishwick and Co., Ltd., 33 King Street, Manchester, 2, who have assigned it to James Clarke and Sons (Haulage), Ltd., 35 Dialstone Lane, Stockport.

Messrs. W. N. and R. T. Morris (S. J.

Morris), Llanfechain, Mont., have taken over a vehicle (51 tons) from Beresford Transport, Ltd. (see also "West Midlands ").

An articulated outfit (51 tons) has been assigned by Mr. N. J. Duddy, Heaton Norris, to H. R. D. Maconochie, Ltd., Borough Chambers, St. Petcrsgate, Stockport. Messrs. Heaton Transport, St. Helens, have sold a lorry (4 tons) to Messrs. S. Worthington, H. W. Gregson and W. Whitehouse, 165 Liverpool Road, Ditton, Widnes, YORKSHIRE Another large purchase is reported from the Yorkshire Area this week. J. Forman, Ltd., Back Roseberry Crescent, Jesmond, have taken over 20 vehicles from the Special Traffics Division of British Road Services. Most of the vehicles are tankers, some of which are articulated outfits. They are based at Hull.

Norman Jowett, Ltd., Stansfield Road, Todmorden, have acquired two more vehicles. Their purchase of 18 vehicles was reported in The Commercial Motor last week. Two more vehicles have gone to W_ Fisher, Ltd., 20 Harborough Hill Road, Barnsley, who have already bought five vehicles. Mr. F. Bennett (G. Bennett and Son), Church Street, Ossett, has added one vehicle to three already in operation. (The Commercial Motor, April 16).

One of two new purchasers is Mr. S. Cooke, Cottage Farm, Wessington, who has taken over two vehicles, and the other is I. Scarr and Sons, Ltd., Brayton, near Selby.

WEST MIDLANDS The progressive re-establishment of Messrs. F. 'Taylor, Henwick Mill, Lower Broadheath, Worcester and Messrs. A. G. Taylor, an associated firm, of Hilton Road, Worcester, is indicated by the purchase of another three •vehicles from British Road Services. They are all Seddon 7-tonners and bring the combined total of the fleet up to nine vehicles, all of which are operated under special A licences, Services to London, Liverpool and Scotland are run.

Two Foden 71-tormers and two' Seddon 7-tonners bring to seven the total number of ex-B.R.S. vehicles purchased by Martins Transport, Ltel., Walsall Road, Great Wyrley, Cheslyn Hay. Thtse will be used on general haulage. Martins now have 26 vehicles.

Another operator who is gradually building up a fleet of special A licence vehicles is Mr. J. A. Marshall (J. A. Marshall [Contractors], Ltd.), Adlington Mill, Badsey, Evesham, With the purchase of two Vulcan 7-tanners the company's fleet has been increased to nine.

Mr. G. S. Webb (G. S. Webb, Ltd.), Regent Garage, Tunstall, has been informed of the success of his tender for' an Austin 5-tonner and a Bedford 5-tonner.

It is Mr. Webb's first purchase. The Bedford has been sold to Mr. B. M. Johnson, 75 Victoria Park Road, Tunstall. A Thomycroft 8-tonner acquired by N. Ferns, Ltd.., 42 Livingston Road, Leek, is the first direct purchase to be made by this concern. In addition, they operate an ex-B.R.S. van which was assigned to them by Beresford Transport, Ltd., High Street, Tunstall.

Harry Holmes, Ltd., The Whetty, Rubery, have made their first purchase. It comprises art oil-engined Dodge 6-tonner and a petrol-engined Thames 6-tonner.

It is that of Guest -riers (Hackney), Ltd., 9 Anton Street, E.8, who, before being taken over the British Transport Commission, :rated from the same address as Guest, iod. and .Ling, Ltd.

They have had assigned to them by Mr. W. A. Guest, 16 HaIford Road, Ickenham, Middlesex, the former company's depot in Anton Street, together with 10 vehicles • (35 tons 2 cwt.) and one spare. They comprise Dennis and Guy vans with capacities ranging from 1,400 cu. ft. to 1,606 csi. ft.

Pickfords ran a new-furniture carriage service from Anton Street during nationalization, and Guest Carriers are continuing in this line. The new company should experience no teething troubles, as the purchaser of the unit, Mr. W. A. Guest, who is a director, was in charge of the depot under Pickfords.

Mr. G. J. Prescott, another director, who is also secretary, was assistant functional manager for the Greater London area of Pickforels' new-furniture service. The other director is Mr. H. H. V. Guest.

Immediately after taking over the depot last Month, the company resumed their former services (also run by Pickfords) to the west of England. New furniture and associated traffics are now delivered to Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Berkshire,

Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, Somerset. Devon, Cornwall and parts of Dorset.

I. Houston and Co., Ltd., 186 Hercules Road, London, S.E.1, have purchased three Bedford 600-cu.-ft. vans which are at present working for Imperial Chemical Industries, Ltd.

Seven more vehicles based at Dagenham Docks, Essex, have gone to W. J. Smith, Pascoe and Co., Ltd., 8 Lloyds Avenue, , London, E.C.3. This latest purchase, with

a total unladen weight of 19 tons 7 cwt.,, will join nine vehicles acquired some months ago (The Commercial Motor, April 23) The latest purchase comprises five Dodge and two Vulcan 10-ton articulated outfits, with Scamme11 Semi-trailers.

Smith, Pascoe is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Samuel Williams and Sons, Ltd., who operate from the same address. A general service is being operated to most parts of the country.

Two vehicles (2 tons) are concerned in the first purchase to be made by Capon and Sons, Ltd„ 26-40 Vale Royal, York Way. London, N.7. Another new purchaser is Mr. L. T. B. Theas, Rowneycroft, • Nettleswell Cross, Harlow, Essex. He has taken over three vehicles (II tons 9 cwt.). •

Assignments reported this week are as follows: Wades Transport (Tottenham),• Ltd., 3 Sherboro' Road, London, N.17, who already have a number of ex-B.R.S. vehicles (The Commercial Motor, April

23), have taken over one vehicle (3 tons ' 18 cwt.) from Messrs S. J. Maley (Haulage). 39 Hale End Road, London, E,17, Clecve Hill Transport, Ltd., have made yet another assignment, this time of one vehicle (2 tons 12 cwt.) based at Rainham, to Mr. A C. Crow, 161 Uraninster Road, Rainham, Essex.

The two vehicles based at Bexley. Kent. s which were reported last week as having been bought by Mr. C. H. T. Cables, 209 Plum Lane, London, S.E.18, have been made over to Cables Transport, Ltd.. Tanners Hill, London, S.E.S.
