RESPONSIBIL1TY for free passes on buses should not be undertaken after September 30 by the Sheffield Transport Department, the Yorkshire Licensing Authority has stated. Proposals which may result in their number being substantially reduced are being considered. Free passes at present cost the department about £10,000 a year, it is understood.
A new scheme has been drawn up by the city's disabled persons' welfare subcommittee whereby eligibility for free transport would depend on registration with welfare schemes approved by the Ministry of Health and the city council, and that the person's available income should not be in excess of the National Assistance Board scale.
