• Several obstacles remain for British hauliers if they are to take advantage of the "considerable" opportunities for expansion abroad following 1992, according to a report forward by the Institute of Grocery Distribution.
It says Europe will not be "open for business" unless vehicle excise duty is harmonised, vehicle weights and dimensions are standardised, cabotage and border restrictions are removed, and access to mainland Europe is improved by the Channel link and more rail links and rail hubs.
Distribution will continue to be contracted out but contracts will become rarer, says the report. It estimates that non-food markets such as DIY and electrical goods will grow fastest.
