• Traffic Area Offices may soon follow the lead of the Vehicle Inspectorate and be hived off and operated as an 'Executive Agency'.
This is one option currently being considered in the Department of Transport's review of TAOs and Traffic Commissioners. It would force the TAOs to operate in a more 'businesslike' manner, while remaining under the DTp umbrella. Government ministers would not, however, have any responsibility for the new offices.
