Sources close to the Government revealed this week that Paul Channon has won a massive spending battle with the Treasury to link the UK's major industrial centres with American-style eight-lane freeways. Several billions of pounds will be required to fund the programme.
0 Unfounded environmental objections to 40-tonne trucks and 11.5-tonne axle weights must be overcome, Transport Secretary Paul Channon told the Freight Transport Association at its annual dinner in London this week.
The only other obstacle to 40 tonnes is the ability of bridges to take the extra strain, said Channon, and the Government is pursuing a strengthening programme as a matter of urgency.
