Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Tipper operators it seems, are not immune to the demand for more and more power and the extra productivity, it can bring — most of the manufacturers will be offering more horses than ever before with plenty of new vehicle options.

• If you had to pick an overriding theme for the exhibits at this year's Tipcon, then the growing interest in increased engine power would be high on the list. Tippermen seem to have caught the same bug as their general haulage counterparts — they want the extra productivity that the latest batch of high-powered machines can offer.

lveco Ford's show line-up underlines that trend. On display are two of its new eight-wheeler 'Maggies', powered by revised versions of the long-serving 12.8-litre aircooled Deutz engine. In the 300.32 it develops 223kW (315hp), while the 300.34's lump pushes out 250kW (340hp), making it one of the most powerful eight-leggers in the UK. The Maggie is proving to be a popular choice for muckaway operations where durability is more important than an ultra-light kerbweight.

If you are looking for more power in a six-wheeler, however, then there is always the new Cargo 2428C, fitted with the same 208kW (283hp) charge-cooled Cummins L10 engine as the 3828 Cargo tractor. Iveco Ford reckons the 2428C will satisfy those tipper operators looking for outstanding productivity, thanks to its low kerbweight and high power. As an option in place of the normal Fuller nine-speed Roadranger box, the 2428C can be fitted with the Eaton Twin Splitter, which should appeal to long-distance motorway drivers.

New power units feature in Leyland Dais Tipcon display, following the demise of the old TL11 engine late last year. The old TL11C-equipped 30.26L lightweight 8x4 Constructor has now become the plain 30.26, driven by Dafs 190kW (256hp) 11.6-litre turbocharged engine which .offers 5% more torque. The same engine is used in the 2426 Constructor six-wheeler, sold as either a tipper or mixer chassis. Both Constructor models have the ZF Ecomid nine-speed synchromesh gearbox which has ousted the old Spicer constant-mesh box.

Weight range

Moving down the weight range, Leyland Daf will also be showing its 17.18 Freighter with the Daf 6.2-litre 134kW (180hp) turbocharged engine.

It's been a long time coming, but MAN's F90-cabbed eightwheeler has finally arrived in the UK with the option of three engine outputs ranging from 191kW to 246kW (260 to 330hp). The most interesting model which, happily, is also the vehicle on display, is the 30_265, fitted with the latest 10-litre five-cylinder chargecooled D2865LF engine developing 191kW,and 1,100Nm (811lbft) of torque. The five-cylinder engine replaces the old 179kW (240hp) block and should suit those buyers looking for a moderately-powered chassis.

Like the old F8 design it replaces, the new MAN eightwheeler has a bolted and riveted chassis but now offers higher ground clearance. There is also the option of 7.22m wheelbase chassis for brick carrying and general haulage.

To back up its F90 rigid, MAN is exhibiting an M90 17tonner, which can be specified with a 169kW (230hp) engine.

Eight-legger

The recent announcement by ERF that it will be fitting the latest Perkins Eagle TX engine in an eight-legger (CM 26 April) has come a bit too late for Tipcon, so EftF is having to make do with the recentlylaunched ES6 rigid with the Steyr all-steel cab, along with an E14 tractor and an E8 sixwheeler with the 198kW (265hp) charge-cooled Cummins C-Series engine.

Foden has also recently adopted the 198kW chargecooled C-Series in both its 3000 Series rigid tipper chassis and new 32-tonne tractor. But if you're looking for real power in an eight-wheeler you can always opt for the latest Caterpillar 3406B ATAAC engines at 261kW or even 317kW (350 and 425hp).

Harrogate marks the public debut for the Foden twin-steer model, which will be fitted with the Perkins 300-series engine, and is on loan from Bradshaw. The tractors will be on show outside the hall: inside, Foden will be showing two 8x4 4300 models fitted with 10-litre 224kW (300hp) Cat engines, one fitted with a Wilcox aggregate tipping body, the other with a bulk feed body.

Blown engine

Steyr Trucks will be making. its first trip to Tipcon this year, where it will be showing a new 17-tonne 4x2 tipper chassis with its own 156kW (210hp) blown engine. The stand will also contain the single-bunk version of the Steyr 4x2 tractive units.

Mercedes-Benz is also pouring on the power for its stand exhibits. Two Powerliner 2 vehicles will be shown — a 24355 6x2 twin-steer tractor in Woodhouse Transport livery, and a 1735S 4x2 tractor in Hargreaves Quarries livery. Both vehicles have veeeight engines giving 260kW (354hp). Also on show are the Mercedes 3025K 8x4 tipper, and the 2421K 6x4 tipper.

Volvo is showing only rigid vehicles on its stand, with two eight-leggers based on the 234 kW (314hp) FL10 model with the Volvo TD102F engine, matched to the R1400 ninespeed gearbox. One vehicle has been bodied by Keenline, the other by Wilcox. The remaining two vehicles on the stand are a rigid 6x4 FL7 model and a FI,617 4x2.

The Renault-engined G260 and G290 6x4 models are the mainstays of the Renault stand. More than adequately powered at 192kW (260hp) for the 6x4 G260 model, and 214kW (291hp) for the 8x4 G290 model, both vehicles feature Renault's B9 ninespeed gearbox.

AWD is marking its Tipcon debut with its monster 53tonne articulated Multidrive eight-wheeler. Powered by a Cat 3406B 3171cW (425hp) engine, the 8x6 vehicle has a nine-speed Fuller gearbox. AWD has recently sold a number of these to a haulage contractor in the Sudan, and the truck is primarily aimed at tough overseas operations.

Inside the exhibition hall AWD is showing a TL 8-14 7.5 tonne 4 x2 tipper fitted with a Beacon Tippers end ram and a dropside steel tipping body. Aimed at the building trade, the TL-based tipper is likely to meet strong competition from similar vehicles based on the Iveco Ford Cargo and the Leyland Daf Roadrunner.

High roof

Seddon Atkinson is showing a tractive unit, an 8x4, and a 6x4 on its stand. The tractor, of course, is the Strato, displayed in Stratocruiser 4x2 high-roof form powered by a 298kW (400hp) Cummins engine and a 12-speed Eaton Twin-Splitter gearbox. Again, it is a bit early to see if the Seddon Atkinson tippers will get the Perkins TX Eagle engines.

After a trip round the main chassis manufacturer, there are a number of component stands that should be worth a look.

First stop for any employer should be the Road Transport Industry Training Board on stand E5. The RTITB will be showing details on its MD90 Open Learning scheme for managers, a Modular training scheme, the Certificate of Professional Competence, and a Young Driver Scheme.

Don-Bur has its latest development, an all-aluminium UK-built, tipping semi-trailer. The manufacturer claims that its 47.8m3 capacity trailer weighs 500kg less than a comparable steel-chassied stepframe trailer. Other new things to look out for should be Dayton Walther's new sliding fifth wheel for Special Types Category 2, and Granning's latest air-sprung trailer axle.

Alcoa is showing the first examples of its new alloy wheels.

There are new pumps prom Hytec, new axles from Spicer and TEC Equipment, more warranty from Rubery OwenRockwell, single-line grease injectors from Lincoln, and a new PT-0 from Dana. It should be a good show.
