• AWD has announced profits of 25.6 million in its first full year of operation.
For the 14 months up to the end of December, AWD's turnover was 2125.8 million — 232.4 million from overseas sales and 293.4 million from the UK.
Since David JB Brown bought the ailing Bedford truck and bus business in Dunstable, the 1,200 employees have produced more than 6,000 trucks and some 24.5 million has been invested in engineering research. Production is estimated to rise to 8,000 units this year which includes plans to triple production of civilian trucks up to 3,000 units in 1989. The truck manufacturer will concentrate on completing its product range from 6.5 tonnes to 40 tonnes during 1989, when it hopes to grab 5% of the UK market.
0 AWD has bid for a 2125 million Army contract. As part of its tender, AWD has
pledged to buy back a vehicle for every one supplied to the Ministry of Defence and sell it to the Third World after reconditioning. The firm has also agreed to buy back all trucks sold under the new MOD contract at the end of the vehicles' 10-year life cycle.
