FREIGHTLINER has named Jim Burnham as director of marketing and operations.

Mr Burnham joined Freightliner in 1968 as manager, north east area and was appointed director of marketing in 1976. He is a member of both the Chartered Institute of Transport and the Institute of Marketing. Freightliner sees this new appointment as a means of co-ordinating the marketing and operations functions more closely.

Syd Durham is the new district manager of Greater Manchester Transport's Bolton district. Before taking over this new district he was manager of the Rochdale district, a post he had held since 1975.

Mr Durham joined Greater Manchester Transport in 1973 after five years with Wallasey Corporation Transport. He is a member of the Chartered Institute of Transport and the Institute of Traffic Administration. The transatlantic container operator Seatrain has appointed Alex Harper as director of marketing for its UK operations.

He joins Seatrain from Octain Forwarding and has previous experience in the shipping and export industry.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders had promoted Ken Barnes to chief engineer. He succeeds Frank Denmee who is retiring after 20 years with the society.

Mr Barnes joined the SMMT from Chrysler UK where he was senior engineer for vehicle safety. Before this latest promotion Mr Barnes was deputy chief engineer for the SMMT.

Don Jordan has been named as director and general manager of Euroway Express Coaches,, the continental coach services operated jointly by Wallace Arnold Tours and several European operators.

Mr Jordan will continue as group licensing officer for Wallace Arnold.

The Chartered Institute of Transport has appointed its first information officer. He is David Wragg, formerly manager of public relations services for the P and 0 Group.

Mr Wragg is also the editor of the Institute's journal and this new dual appointment reflects the CIT's desire to become more closely in public debate on transport problems.

James Wilkinson is the new financial controller of Containerbase (Scotland), the company running the inland container port at Coatbridge east of Glasgow. He was previously with the British Steel Corporation at Motherwell.

The Hargreaves Group has appointed its chief executive John Hendry as a company director. Mr Hendry moved to the group in 1957 and became its planning manager in 1968. He was appointed chief executive in 1977.
