The hard-won experience of J. E. (Jed) Day will not be lost to Southern British Road Services on his retirement as marketing manager. He is continuing as a consultant and is going to have to ration the time that he devotes to his hobbies of painting, gardening and doing-it-himself.
His colleagues presented him with sufficient artist's materials to keep him going for the next 30 years and with undue modesty he thinks they have been far too complimentary to his skill as a painter.

He acquired the soubriquet -Jedfrom the confirmatory notes of oral messages that he used to write and sign with his initials. Soon people were asking: Who is this Jed? Many have since learnt — and, I may add, to their pleasure.
When he went to say his official farewell to Heinz he was reminded that the company had been dealing with him for 42 years. Not many men in such a volatile industry as transport can claim that length of association with a customer.
