IT IS SAD to read letters in Cri from individuals who appear t be so ill-informed.

1 refer to the letter "Who' heard of -TEC?" from R. Y. ( Cropper of Cornwall Technici College, Redruth. I would nt dispute with Mr Cropper thE many operators may not ha‘d heard of TEC, but they can nevi have attended meetings of the trade association, or of the professional institute.

Nor can they have read th technical Press, the RTITB' own journal Transport Trainin or maintained contact with the local technical college, becaus TEC has been around sinc 1973. Discussions on a TE scheme for the road transpo industry commenced in 197E culminating with the issue b the TEC-AB programme con mittee of a list of units of stud appropriate to the award of TEC Certificate in Motor Vehicl Engineering.

Many colleges began coursc leading to this award in Sej tember.

The content of the units c study available is appropriate t the heavy vehicle world. Spac here will not allow me to COVE all the topic areas included, bi if Cl engine operation Cl fui systems, CI engine design an construction, compressed a brakes, power steering, ant jack-knifing devices, retarden, CV suspension systems and C transmissions, to mention bt only some of the contents, ca be deemed inappropriate to th heavy vehicle technician, then would ask Mr Cropper to sa what is appropriate.

As for his assertion that th TEC qualification will b "meaningless in the heav vehicle world." Perhaps he ca tell us, "to whom?" • GUY SCOTT Head of Automobile En gineering Colchester In stitute.
