Trans frigoroute poised to play a greater role at government leve

ALTHOUGH a total of more than 400 firms belong to Transfrigo route Europe, which acts as a sort of pressure group for the carriers of road freight at controlled temperatures, few British companies are listed.

This may have something to do with the fact that TE was set up under the auspices of the IRU and at the request of the Inland Transport Committee of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe. However, that was 14 years ago, and TE is still relatively unknown by the road transport industry if not by manufacturers and governments. For it represents controlled temperature carriers in 21 European and Middle Eastern countries.

Transfrigoroute Europe may become better known in the fu ture, for fuel consumption con trols may be with us — or with Europe — sooner than some people think and this would bring in TE at international governmental level, writes Brian Chalmers-Hunt.

At present members get the advantages of a European net work of refuelling and cooling system service stations and an assistance system in co operation with the IRU in the case of breakdown. A committee is looking into roll-on /roll-off operation and piggyback services. Although the UK does not have any haulier members at present there are several international companies who have representation in the UK. These include household names such as Frigoscandia Transport AB and Christian Salvesen. The UK is, however, represented by several consultative members. These are Crane Fruehauf Trailers, Freight Bonallack and Petters Ltd.

The present and future benefits of membership by UK national and international hauliers are becoming more evident because of the complexity of the increasing number of amendments to the agreement on the international carriage of perishable foodstuffs and on the special equipment to be used for such carriage which requires technical knowledge and operational experience in various European countries.

Several countries in Eastern Europe, the Middle East and North Africa are interested in ioining the Association. If they , this will reinforce the pre co-operation scheme which t only applies to technical and al considerations but which II increasingly embrace )nomic aspects such as ex3nging information on dis)ution services and return ds.

Its technical advisory corntee comprises the advisory or isultative members of the 'iodation, from the following: inufacturers — of vehicles fit I with controlled temperature vices; of appliances and :essories; of packing Aerials; Cold storage depot erators; refrigerated rehousing companies;

rtual aid scheme operators: urance companies; and contents.

The committee also inves3tes problems connected with road haulage of perishable idstuffs in general and with id haulage traffics at controltemperatures in particular. Numerous activities are card out by Transfrigoroute rope. In many cases for innce, TE acts as a forum for interchange of experiences ween national groupings as II as an advisory body on be

of governments and the J. It also investigates all the iblems related to the carriage goods by road at controlled riperatures.

It co-operates with the United lions Economic Commission Europe to bring together >ups of experts on the car3e of perishable foodstuffs on stoms regulations. rail transrt and the construction of d vehicles.

Transfigoroute Europe Dlishes a multi-lingual year )I( which lists and classifies members. An information Iletin, Frigoriscope, is still olished only in French and rman — TE must be waiting more Britishers to join. Those o do join may find of particuvalue an identification card rch certifies that the equipint specified on it satisfies in 3ry respect the Transfigoroute rope provisions currently in ce and that it conforms with definitions and standards of lex 1 of the ATP.
