REPRESENTATIONS have been made to Manchester Airport Authority because lorries carrying stone for runway repairs and improvements are alleged to be deviating from an agreed route and are using a residential area.

Councillor Leonard Singer said that following complaints he went to see for himself and in 30 minutes counted 30 lorries carrying stone — seven of them with the distinctive orange stickers.

"The agreed route is written into the contract between Manchester Airport and the hauliers. They should travel along the A6 into the centre of Stockport and then make their way to the M63 at Cheadle," he said.

Drivers, he claimed, were taking a short cut to avoid the centre of Stockport.

When complaints were first made, the Airport Authority issued the large orange stickers to the lorry firms so that their vehicles could be easily identifiedif they strayed from the agreed route.

Councillor Singer said he intended to press the airport to be more stringent and expected any offending lorry contractors to be banned from the contract if they deliberately disobey orders.
