Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

design and uses a Gardner 6LX 150 bhp engine, a David Brown 06-600 six-speed gearbox and a David Brown D320 doubledrive rear bogie. The 16ft 9m. chassis takes an E. M. Wilcox all-alloy 17.8 en yd body. Seddon has two six-wheelers powered by Perkins engines; one uses the turbocharged version of the Perkins 6.354 which gives 144 bhp net installed and the other the lowrated version of the Perkins V8510 which gives 152 bhp net installed. The smaller engined model has a wheelbase of 12ft lin, and is plated at 22 tons gvw while the larger model, the 24-DD6-V8, has a 14ft wheelbase and is plated at 24 tons gvw.

All six-wheel British Leyland marques are represented giving a good opportunity to compare specifications and prices. AEC, Guy, Leyland and Redline models are exhibited. The AEC Marshal is fitted with a 24 cu yd Cravens Homalloy alloy body, the Guy Big J6 is shown with a 14 cu yd Edbro bucket loader, the Leyland Bison has a 16 cu yd Thynne insulated alloy body and the Leyland Reiver (formerly Albion) has 8 12 cu yd Edbro alloy body. The newest British Leyland 24-ton chassis is the Redline Super Mastiff which was announced at Earls Court last year, Ford has only one six-wheeler at the convention and this is the DT 2214, This model is a 224onlvw design which uses Ford's

own six-litre turbo engine giving 140 bhp net installed to BS AU 141a:1971 in conjunction with Ford's eight-speed rangechange gearbox. This model is fitted with the recently announced twin-spring bogie and the SVO option of wide single tyres.

Bedford shows its competing model, the KM, which is a 22-ton-gvw 6 x 4 design using the 466 (7.66-litre) diesel which produces 133 bhp net installed. The KM is exhibited with an Edbro 14 cu yd body.

24-ton six-wheelers

Volvo and DAF have brought along 24-ton six-wheelers. Volvo is showing an FB 86 x 38 6 x 2 fitted with a Cravens Homalloy all-welded alloy body with Edbro tipping gear and full air shift controls, and from DAF come two examples of the FAT 2005 DH WB 445 24-ton-gvw 6 x 4 model. This model is powered by a 163 bhp 8.25litre engine and uses a ZF AK6-70 /3gearbox with a GV 70 splitter giving a total of 12 forward speeds. Other chassis exhibits comprise seven four-wheel chassis and four 32-ton-gvw tractive units. Ford is showing the tipper of which a full road test appears elsewhere in CM this week and Chrysler UK Ltd has sent a Dodge K 1050 16-ton-gvw chassis powered by a Perkins 6.3541 engine. Seddon shows its 16-ton-gvw 13:Four model which is powered by a Perkins 6.354.2 — a heavy-duty version of the 6.354 giving 107 bhp net installed.

Vauxhall has three 16-ton-gvw KM fourwheelers all fitted with Edbro 9 Cu yd bodies. The smaller KG model, 12.35 tongvw, shown has a • 10ft wheelbase and is fitted with a Telehoist 6 cu yd body.

Among the 32-ton-gvw tractive units are a British Leyland Buffalo, a Scammell Crusader 280, a Cummins-engined ERF and a Volvo F86.

From Crane Fruehauf comes a full range of tipping vehicles. The exhibits include a high-sided version of the standard attic dump with a body constructed from alloy with 3in. "top-hat" section stiffening channels and 6ft high sides. This trailer, plated at 32 tons, is fitted with one-piece tail-gate, has a capacity of 45 cu yd, an increase of nearly 50 per cent over the standard model.

Standard 32 cu yd alloy bodied tippers will be on show with conventional tandemaxle running gear, and in a specialized form using the Sisu hydraulic drive for a rear bogie.

Pen gco Transport Systems are exhibiting their latest heavy-duty all-welded aluminium monocoque body. The side panel sections have been increased in thickness by fin. and are fitted with one-piece, fun length 6in. x 3in. extruded box section top rails.

Floor support cross-bearers have been increased to 4in. x 4in. section with top edges flanged to increase floor contact area and unsupported floor has been reduced to a minimum with now only 12in. of floor between cross-bearers.

York Trailer Company has a new range of high-tensile alloy tipping bodies designed for use with either rigid, semi-trailer or drawbar chassis on display. The bodies, are available in any length up to 32ft and heights from 3ft to 6ft.

The new bodies are of all-welded alloy monocoque construction, giving light weight coupled with strength and durability. High-tensile alloy extrusions are used throughout and these it is claimed give a greater strength to weight ratio than with similar bodies using normal pressings. Also because the extrusions can be produced in any length, far fewer welds are required than with pressed section.

Constant module metric sections are used throughout the whole range.

Neville Industries (Mansfield) Ltd is showing a new 40 cu yd tipping semi-trailer measuring only 9ft 2in. high to the top of the body sides. This trailer has been developed especially for use under loading hoppers where headroom is restricted.

By making the step in the body floor — and the frame top — a 30deg ramp rather than vertical, stress concentrations have been avoided without the use of unduly heavy reinforcement.

Orthodox Rubery-Owen tandem suspension (with 10-ton axles as standard equipment) is fitted, using 9.00-20 tyres and the trailer is plated for use at 32-tons-gcw. Unladen weight of the semi-trailer tipper with Telehoist single-ram gear is about 4 tons 18cwt.

Edbro Ltd, of Bolton, has a new design of high-capacity steel tipper body with an unladen weight comparable with that of a more expensive aluminium type.

This new body has a 15 cu yd (11.5 cu m) capacity, is built in BS 968 high-tensile steel with lOs gauge for the floor and 13s gauge for the sides and ends.

On demonstration outside the exhibition hall is an Edbro-Metcalfe Duo Loader based on a Leyland Super Comet lift-wheelbase 16-ton-gvw chassis.

The main skip has a capacity of 1 If cu yd (9 cu m) and the small skip a 3 cu yd (2.3 cu m) capacity, making it suitable for the collection of small loads from a number of pick-up points.

Another first showing at Blackpool is the Cravens Homalloy (Woodville) Ltd rigid Tasktip body. The body, an all-welded design includes unique double-rounded bottom side rails for easy discharge.

The rigid Tasktip body is available in a full range of sizes from 12 cu yd and the model being exhibited is mounted on a DAF FAT 2005 DH44S six-wheeler chassis.

Two aluminium alloy tipping bodies are also being exhibited. They include an allwelded tipping body of 16 cu yd capacity 19ft 6in. long and 3ft deep with fixed sides and a standard tailgate and an all-welded body with a 33 Cu yd capacity, which features 2ft high extension sides which fold inwards when not in use.

Redment Engineering Ltd, manufacturer of Hoynor Trailers, is exhibiting a Hoynor 40 cu yd dual-purpose tipping trailer plated at 32-tons-gcw. The triple side sections which are constructed of alloy hollow-plank fold inwards to convert the trailer to a flat platform and this operation can be carried out in a matter of minutes. This same model can also be offered with twistlocks to accept a 20ft container and / or a 15ft 6in. coil-welL Anthony Carrimore (Sales) Ltd has an 18 cu yd body mounted on a 30-ton-gvw Scammell Routeman Mk. 3. The body is of monocoque construction and has a +in. floor and 10 swg sides and tailgate; the tailgate is longitudinally split to enable the lower half to be fastened to the top half when tipping into road-making machinery. The body is fully insulated to enable roadmaking material to be held at a workable temperature for up to six hours.

E. M. Wilcox Ltd has two all-welded aluminium bodies on display for the tipper men. One is a 21 cu yd (16 cu m) design mounted on an eight-wheel ERF and the other is 37 cu yd (28.5 cu m) tipping frameless body mounted on a Highway DB7530 F2M 29.25 gross semi-trailer.
