• A number of Mercedes-Benz lightweight chassis/cabs equipped with bodies built by local bodybuilders were shown last week at the Perry Barr, Birmingham branch of Colemore Depot Ltd, MercedesBenz dealers for the greater Birmingham area, which typified the policy of the vehicle makers of appointing dealers with a thorough knowledge of local requirements and bodybuilding facilities.

Built for the All Seasons Contracting Co Ltd of Oldbury, an L306D chassis cab is fitted with a drop-sided body of timber construction and a six-man crew cab made by the Erode-Leigh company of Oldbury, while an aluminium boxvan built from a Clark kit by Hawley Mills and Co Ltd of Walsall is mounted on an L406D chassis /cab. Having a capacity of 600 cu ft and capable of carrying a payload of 25cwt, the boxvan is based on the version of the L406D with a gvw of 3.5 tons; the payload of a standard L406D 4.5 ton gvw van, converted by the Hawley Mills company to a glasscarrying vehicle, is 45cwt.

The Mercedes-Benz target for the sale of commercial vehicles in the UK this year is 2000, including 700 heavies.
