• A defective trailer tyre and the need to use an old tractive unit landed David West and Sons of Dunfermline, Fife, before the deputy Scottish LA, Mr H. R. Aylmer at Kirkcaldy, last week.
The company's 22-vehicle fleet with a margin of three was reduced by one to 24 vehicles. Mr Aylmer said he accepted that the company had lapsed rather than committed a serious breach of standards.
The firm had been before the LA in August 1972. Since then it had received an immediate GV9 in January on a tractive unit and a similar prohibition on the trailer being drawn.
Mr James West, director, told the LA that this tractive unit was a fairly old vehicle which was due to be replaced. But delay in delivering the new tractive unit compelled them to continue using the old one. The tractive unit had now been replaced.
Of the tyre defect, Mr Thomas Scott of the National Tyre Service, said his company undertook complete servicing, checking, changing and general maintenance. His records showed the tyres allegedly deficient had been checked two days previously and had been recorded as sound.
Mr West said his company would welcome a complete check on their fleet at any time. The LA took one vehicle off the margin, leaving 22 specified and two authorized.
