Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Perkins announce today a new 8.8-litre V8 — the V8.540 which will first be installed in Ford chassis. Although similar to the V8.510 which continues in production, the new engine incorporates substantial changes to the power unit and ancillary equipment.

The extra capacity has been achieved by lengthening the stroke from 4.5in. to 4.75in.: bore stays the same at 4.25in. Other changes include new all-alloy pistons, new connecting rods, fully heat treated crankshaft, high-strength crankcase structure, pressed-steel camshaft cover and high durability steel-aJloy inlet valves.

Power output is the same as the high rated version of the V8.510, ie 180 bhp gross, but this is achieved at 2600 rpm, 200 rpm less than for the V8.510. Maximum gross torque is slightly increased from 398 lb ft to 410 lb ft, at the same speed of 1650 rpm.

Ford models to use the new engine will be the models DA 2417 and DA 2817 (24 and 28-ton-gcw artics) and DT 2417 (6 x 2 and 6 x 4 24-ton-gvw six-wheelers).

Ford gives typical net installed figures in these chassis — 168 bhp and 398 lb ft — which allows the engine to be used legally in vehicles up to 28 tons gcw.

As the rated speed has come down 200 rpm Ford has announced a range of associated drive line combinations using the six and eight-speed version of Ford's own gearbox to meet all operating conditions. On the attics, for example, the DA 2417 using the 8-570-3 eight-speed box is specified with a 5.05 to 1 rear axle but on the DA 2817 the same gearbox can be used with 5.61 5.91, or 6.63 to 1 axles.
