From Our Political Correspondent

TRANSPORT operators and manufac

turers interested in the Common Market need to hustle if their competitive machinery is to be "in gear." Recent trends and statements at Westminster have shown fairly clearly that a timetable has been fixed, and that only complete failure on the Commonwealth or agricultural issues can slow or halt events.

The fixing of the Commonwealth Premiers' Conference for September means that the Government is aiming to have a plan for entry settled by the end of July.

If all this happens—and the Government is striving hard to ensure that it can —there are two possible dates for entry into the Treaty of Rome. They are January 1 or July 1, 1963. At the moment the July date is favourite.
