Other Service Vehicles

A MOST efficient series of illumin

ated identification signs for vehicles employed by police, fire, ambulance and other civil-defence services has been devised and placed on the market by Joseph Lucas, Ltd., Great King Street, Birmingham, 19.

All the services, except fire, for which the colour is amber, have white lettering on a black background. Each sign consists of a mask intended for that head lamp not already equipped with the A.R.P. " top-hat " mask. It carries the required letters on a glass

plate in the centre, a hood of the required depth being fitted over this, in order to prevent upward light. The glass plate is indirectly illuminated through the faceted edges, which are diamond cut. This avoids any halo effect which might otherwise occur, and enables the letters to be clearly distinguished, as the illumination is very even.

The signs are weatherproof, not easily damaged and have a neat and " built-in " appearance, whilst the letters can be easily cleaned and are readily interchangeable if and when necessary.

The signs will be mounted on the four standard sizes of Lucas head-lamp rim.

Two universal shields are also being provided, the difference being in the size of the cowls. Operators of American cars and Bedford and Ford lorries will find that these will meet their requirements. The only disadvantage is that the hood has to be attached to the lamp front in some way, whereas where the rim type can be used the hood is already attached.

The lighting wiring must, of course, be modified so that this lamp may be controlled independently of the ordinary cowled head lamp.
