The Three Sultan Models are Built Up from Components Produced by Well-known American Manufacturers.

AMERICAN MOTORS, LTD., Audrey house, Ely Place, E.C. 1, are the factory representatives for two now akrrivals from America. in the 13ritieh market. These chassis, are the 30-cwt. Comet, and the 15-cwt., 20-cwt., and 30-cwt. Sultan. The company will market the vehicles through sole concession/mires or wholesale . distributors covering large territories; no deposits or contracts for quantities will be required,

but the coneessionnaires will be required to advertise the vehicles adequately and to order sample vehicles for demonstration purposes.

The 30-cwt. Comet chassis is built in a modern factory equipped with, thoroughly up-to-date machinery. It is.provided with a four-cylindered engine '-of 3le-in, bore and 5-in. stroke ; following standard practice, all the valves are on one side and are enclosed by a single plate. The cylinders are cast en bloc, but are provided with detachable hads. Combined pressure add splash lubrication is provided, whilst the cooling. water circulation is tberinek-eyphonic.. The R.A.C. rating is 19.6 but the engine will develop 38.6 b.h.p. on test.

The radiator is built up with a-castiron header and bottom tank enclosing a deep cellular core. The three-speed-and-reverse gearbox

and the 10-in. multiple dry disc clutch are mounted to form a unit with the engine. From the gearbox a shaft vlith two universal joints tDlies the drive to an overhead worm-driven rear axle with a gear ratio of ria to 1. The rear spring pads are in one with the axle casing. Both brakes operate on drums bolted to the rear wheels ; they are of the internal-expanding type, and the drums are 114 ins. irkdiameter. Both

brakes are provided with equalizing gear.. The front axle is of the standard I-beam section., type, made from speeial alloy steel. Wo3d wheels are fitted as standard.

Carefulattention has been paid to springing. The front springs are slightly over 3 ft. in length, whilst thew at the rear have a length. of 4 ft. 2 ins.

A worm, and complete worm wheel are employed for the steering gear, and the '18-in. steering wheel allevre for adequate and comfortable control.

The frame is of the ordinary pressedsteel-construction, tapered to front and rear, and inswept close to the dash. An unusual feature is the provision of a.bar joining the ends of the front dumb irons.

The tyres are 34 ins, by 4 ins., with either solids or pneumatics at the front and solids at the rear.'

' We believe that the one-ton Seltan chassis will have a considerable vcigue in the British market when it, arrives. To conform with British taste, it will be 'fitted with H.T. magneto, impulse starter and oil lamps; if required; it can be supplied with the original American equipment of electric dynamo, Willa-rd storage battery, distributor, and -Metric lights. It can also be fitted with solid or pneumatic cord tyres; these latter at an extra post.

The Machine is provided with a specially-designed overhead-valve engine known as the Gray Victory. It has a bore and stroke of"4 ins. and 5 ins, respectively, and is of the four-cylinclered rnonobloc type. -It is well known how powerful and-efficient is a well-designed engine with overhead valves, and several engines of similar construction are now being. employed on British chassis. The lubrication is by force feed to. the three main bearings, also to the timing gears and connecting-rod troughs; the camshaft bearings, pistons, etc., are

lubricated by splash. The plunger-type oil pump has double cheek valves.

A three-speed-and-reverse Fuller gearbox, with dry-plate clutch, is bolted up as a unit with the engine, the whole being supporte,d at three points in order -to isolate the unit from the effects of frame torsion. The Fuller gearbox is too well known to need detailed description. The gear change lever is carried in a. housing forming the top cover. It is of the invisible gate type and is centrally

positioned. The gears are 31 per cent. nickel-steel, whilst the shafts are nickel chrome steel.

The hand or emergency brake, unlike British practice, operates on a drum situated behind the gearbox. This brake is , of the contracting band type. A shaft with two universal, joints, both totally enclosed in steel dust-proof cases, conveys the drive to a Clark internal-gear dual rear axle, in which there is a separate load-carrying member. A frame of the ordinary channel-secthin pressed-steel type is employed.

The petrol tank, which is positioned under the driver's seat, has a capacity of 16 gallons.

The front axle is an I-beam drop forging, and the stub axles are provided with tapered roller bearings for the front wheels.

The other Sultan models are of very similar construction to the one which we have just described.
