McCulla, which employs more than 150 people, carries out a lot of groupage work around the British Isles, delivering to large supermarkets, major hotel groups, well-known restaurant chains, and smaller shops and markets.
Beattie says: "We transport sausages, red meat, chicken, cheese and butter produced in Ireland as well as related products such as ready meals for supermarkets, beefburgers and yoghurts. We also do some pharmaceutical work." Drivers from the company are issued with fuelcards, and fill up in the Republic of Ireland where possible, due to the generally cheaper prices. They typically travel to Irish ports such as Belfast and Dublin, using ferry companies such as Stena, P&O, Seatrucks and Irish Ferries to get to
Cairnryan, Heysham, Holyhead and Liverpool. "Every new customer has to be credit checked; we have credit insurance in place, and we can pick and choose what work we go for," says McCulla.
