WE ARE within 12 months of the deadline for drivers to complete their training to continue driving commercially and still hear how the driver shortage will be made worse as older drivers retire rather than obtain the qualification.
I have been involved in training since its inception five years ago for PSV (PCV) drivers. At least five drivers I know said they would retire rather than sit in a classroom for 35 hours. As the deadline loomed, all of them hurried to complete the training — one with days to spare.
It will be interesting to see whether, next September, the prospect of handing back the keys for the last time has caused the same change of heart as it has in the passenger sector. Chris Butterfield Aylesbury
