• The Road Users' Alliance (RUA) has been launched with the bold announcement that it intends to get Britain moving, hut membership take-up so far appears to be sluggish.
Formed from an alliance between the RAC Foundation and the Refined Bitumen Association, the RUA intends to bring the government to task on its transport spending and highlight the importance of roads to everyone who uses them.
"We believe that the roads have been neglected for far too long," says RUA director Tim Green.
But the organisation is being guarded about who exactly has joined up—a meeting with prospective members does not appear to have been immediately successful.
"We had a good turnout with over 20 organisations turning up," says an RUA spokeswoman. "We had a lot of positive interest and one trade organisebon expressed interest in joining." However, she declined to name anyone for fear of "putting pressure on them".
The Freight Transport Association has already said that it is not interested: "We wish it well, but we won't be involving ourselves with it," says a spokesman.
However, a Road Haulage Association spokeswoman is more positive, saying: "It's something we have been talking about since the demise of the British Road Federation."
