Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The cost of launching and advertising two new models is being blamed for a slight fall in first-half profits at Birmingham van-maker LDV.

Pre-tax profits for the first six mouths of 1996 fell by 6% to £10.6m, although turnover increased by 12% to £110.1m. During the period, LDV launched its Pilot and Convoy vans and mounted a national advertising campaign designed to improve its brand awareness and promote the new products.

Chief executive Allan Amey says he is pleased LDV has managed to maintain a return on sales of 9.6% in an extremely competitive market. Between January and June, LDV registrations increased by more than 18% while exports grew by 77%. Output at the Birmingham plant is currently 400 vans a week.
