Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE NEED to reach a wage settlement in the West Midlands this year looks like taking prece. dence over the Transport and General Workers Union's national goal of a £100 basic wage.

A TGWU conference in the West Midlands agreed last weeli to seek a substantial increase ir pay, and area organiser Jirr Hunt told CM that details of thE claim will be specified in time fa a meeting of the area Joint In dustrial Council on October 5. He explained that the dele gates took acount of the nationa (E100) policy, but also bore ir mind resolutions from branches and the prevailing economi( situation in the West Midlands. "In the last year, unemploy rnent has more than double( from 6.8 per cent in June 1980 t( 14.8 per cent last August, and i is still rising," said Mr Hunt.

This softly, softly line from thi union looks like cutting ice witl hauliers in the region who, las year, were unable to read agreement with the union on wage increase, and imperillei the JIC's future as a result.

"I am very, very keen that wi get a settlement this year," sail West Midlands Road Haulag Association secretary Bob Ward The area whose £83 settle ment last winter upset the Eng lish equilibrium was Scotian( and the TGWU has lodged £100 a week claim there, but ha not specified any reduction i the working week.

RHA Scottish secretary Tor Brattin said his members did nc intend to "rush into things" thi year, and added: "This clair bears no relation to the state c the industry. We will find it e) tremely difficult to negotiate o it."

Claims for a £100 basic rat have also been lodged with th Metropolitan and South-ea; area and Kent.

A meeting is also planned b( tween employers and trade union representatives on Tyt side, following the Transpo and General Workers Union's 19 quest that moves be made I establish a JIC in the Norther area (CM September 12).
