10M December, Ford will be offering the Escort 1.3-litre and 1.6re versions with an optional five-speed transmission.

"The new transmission, which has been designed with a view ovard more economical and efficient driving, is a further delopment of the Escort's four-speed gearbox to include an addiinal fifth forward gear," says Ford.

By retaining the previous gear ratios in the first four gears, Ford II continue to use the present housing. The fifth gear is mounted in adapter, which increases the width of the transmission — when ?wed lengthwise — by only 45mm At a constant speed of 130km/h, the "long" fifth gear reduces gine speed by around 1,000rpm to approximately 3,300rom. This gults in more economical driving, and a lower noise level.
