THWinterventiori of the Lord Provost of Glasgow in the resent dispute at. the Elderslie bus garage of Glasgow Corporation was criticized by Councillor David S. Brown, convener of the. transport committee, at last week's meeting of the corporation.* Mr. Brown complained that the Lord Provost had intervened without consultation with committee lepresentatives and had brought about a settlement which was contrary to .the declared policy of th,e men's union and at variance with the offer made by the transport department in negotiations.

The Lerd Provost, Sir Patrick Dollen, said that he had intervened at the request of the Government, which took the view that -it would be against the public interest if a stoppage of transport took place in consequence of the deadlock which had been reached.

In reply to Bailie W: Sim Patrick said that the Ministry, of Labour Conciliation Department had sought his intervention.

Councilltir Brown alleged that. this was the third time-there had 'leen intervention without consultation of the

committee in charge. He suggested that such action weakened the _authority of those who had had to deal with interruptions of service and of minor strikes.

The Lord Provost said that he might have acted in a way that was not quite re'gular, but he felt that he was just]• • fled in doing what he could to remove the strike danger at a ti,rne when it would be so prejudicial to the national interest.
