Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The professional majority in this industry has fought hard over many years against the charge of being at best an unnecessary evil and at worst the cause of all that is wrong with our highways and towns.

Now the same people who have been laying that charge at our door are supporting us because they have seen the light...I don't think so.

Let us get back to what this is all about, which is UK Road Transport's fight against our government for a level playing field with our European partners. This protest action began some years ago with a few East Anglian hauliers demonstrating.

Naturally they got no support, and the leader was persecuted by the authorities for some time afterwards. Action has taken various forms since then, culminating in last month's demos with the farmers, which proved effective.

It goes without saying that the same or similar action would be both foolish and ineffective in the future if further protest were required, as looks inevitable. Drivers being arrested, hauliers being prosecuted, vehicles being impounded and the scourge of hangers-on with other agendas have to be avoided at all costs.

That said, there is only one form of action open to us. It does not involve taking trucks anywhere; quite the contrary. It can be done—I am up for it: if you are, let us get on with it or let us carry on working for nothing and being good Brits! D Maclean,

DM Truck Washing, Abingdon, Oxfordshire.
