• Household removals giant Pickfords is cutting back to cope with the slump in the housing market.
"Pickfords is being forced to trim its resources to a level more appropriate to current and anticipated demand," says the company. "Where staff levels need to be reduced, it will normally be on a last-in-first-out basis, and every effort will be made to redeploy them in sister companies.
"We have been pulling in our horns for the past few months, but sadly reliance on natural wastage may not be enough."
