• Terence Daly, a director of Scott Cabs, has been ordered to pay fines and costs totalling 2350 by Scunthorpe magistrates after admitting offences arising out of the misuse of a minibus.
At an earlier hearing Scott Cabs, of Ashby, Scunthorpe had been ordered to pay 22,850 for aiding and abetting an unlicenced driver to use a PSV, using a vehicle when a higher rate of excise duty was payable, without insurance, a PSV Operator's Licence, test certificates or Certificates of Initial Fitness.
A former director, James Ramage, was cleared of any involvement (CM 21-27 September).

Daly, of Charterhouse Drive, Bottesford, Scunthorpe, admitted driving a PSV without a driving licence, and using a vehicle without a PSV test certificate, PSV Operator's Licence, insurance, or Certificate of Initial Fitness, and when a higher rate of vehicle excise duty was payable.
For the prosecution, Stephen Baggott said that in December 1988 a minibus driven by Daly was stopped by a traffic examiner.
Daly had no PSV driving licence badge and claimed he was a part-time employee, Subsequent inquiries revealed he was a director. He said he had held a PSV driving licence about 20 years before and was a US citizen, only in this country temporarily. For Daly, John Roberts said that he had come back from the States to be told that everything was alright and above board in what was a family business.
Daly said he had decided to invest in the company and had been told that it was up and running and a licence was in situ. He denied knowing that the minibus he had been driving was not covered by insurance, but admitted signing the hire agreement for the vehicle.
The magistrates fined Daly 2250 with 2100 costs and endorsed his driving licence with four penalty points.
Allegations against Samuel Ramage arising from the same incident and the operation of another minibus in November 1988 have been withdrawn.
