• Burton's Biscuits has bought eight Abel Uniswop demountable bodies, a converted Seddon Atkinson 3-11 drawbar and four 2-11s as part of a modified distribution system.
The 3-11, which has an extended wheelbase, can accommodate two demountable bodies at a time: the prime mover has a lifting tag axle to increase its payload potential to 20.8 tonnes.
Abel Demountables has fitted a Peitz automatically extendable drawbar A-frame to minimise the straight-line gap between-truck and trailer.
The drawbar unit is used as a trunking vehicle, and the bodies are trunked overnight to a stockless depot at Newcastle-upon-Tyne, where the Abel-equipped 2-11s are based to make local deliveries.
Two more Seddons with Abel swap body equipment are based at Risley, to extend the "split-trunking" scheme and as substitutes for Newcastlebased vehicles.
El Abel expects more orders from British Gas, one of its largest customers, which currently operates 116 Abel bodies.
