Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Danish hauliers, who have retro-fitted over 5,000 patented fuel filter systems to their MAN, Volvo, Iveco, Ford, Renault, Scania and Mercedes vehicles over the past year, are reporting fuel savings of up to 10%. Now the Economiser system is to be launched in the UK by Scan Diesel Filter of Kingstonupon-Thames, Surrey. In use, fuel is pumped to the bottom of an extra filter where it passes back up through a liquid which is claimed to separate metal deposits, sulphur, carbon, bacteria, fungi and algae, paraffin particles and water from the fuel. At the same time the fuel is preheated, via the engine coolant, to 35°C before injection, so avoiding the requirement for winter additives to prevent waxing. The contaminated liquid filter has to be replaced after 5,500 litres, or 15,000km at a cost of £8.25. Cleaner fuel should reduce wear to injectors and fuel pumps, while the makers claim a 21.5% reduction in the carbon and sulphur content of the exhaust.

A range of models is available. The system is priced at 2795 (ex-VAT) and takes three to five hours to install.
