POST OFFICE exemptions to drivers' hours requirements will be removed — but private sector operators will have to wait for some time before the PO is compelled to adopt the same operating dmditions.

Parcels carriers have campaigned through the Road Haulage Association for the exemption to be removed, and appear to have won Government agreement.

"It has been accepted by the Government that the Post Office should conic into line, and this will he put right in the next round of regulations," said Patrick Jackson, Under Secretary at the Department of Transport.

He told hauliers in Portugal this week: "Your position is accepted by Ministers."

The PO exemptions will be "swept up" along with other exemptions when the DTp amends domestic drivers' hours rules. The review of these rules however will only take place when agreement is reached in Brussels on changes to EEC regulations.
