Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

EVERYTHING the truck driver needs to know in order to do his job efficiently (and legally!)" — that is the publisher's claim for what The Truck Driver's Handbook (Kogan Page in association with Ford Trucks; 0.95 hardback; £4.95 softback) contains.

However, the author, David P. Soye, a registered heavy goods vehicle instructor with the Road Transport Industry Training Board, points out that this book is a layman's guide to legal requirements. Operators who encounter difficulties with the law are advised to seek expert legal advice.

It is a nicely produced 248-page book aimed both at experienced drivers and newcomers.

Part I — on drivers and the law — explains how to apply for an hgv licence and advice on keeping it clean; and also deals with: the powers of the police; drivers' hours (UK/EEC regs); and accident procedure.

Part 2 deals with roping and sheeting; dangerous loads; driving overseas; basic first aid; and dealing with emergencies.

Part 3, entitled "Plus . . plus . . . plus", lists recovery services; police, motoring and weather service phone numbers; a guide to motorway service stations; CB radio; and information and maps to help drivers get through London (weight limits on bridges and so on).

The appendices include details of Licensing Authority areas, addresses and phone numbers; and a Ford Truck Specialist Dealer Service Guide.
