THE Transport and General Workers' Union has called for the setting up of a body to co-ordinate energy policy, in which the Government, trades unions and management are all represented.
The object of the body says the TGWU, would be to remove the question of energy policy from "the short-term political considerations that hamper Government thinking." This call for such a body — called the Energy Planning Authority by the TGWU — reflects the wish of the union to get involved with the energy debate. The union has a large membership not only in energy consuming industries, but also energy producers, such as gas, oil, electricity, coal and nuclear-power industries.
Said TGWU general secretary Moss Evans: "We want a trade-union voice in the energy debate. Experts and policitians are not always right."
