MHEN original permits are issued to V, hauliers, the Road Haulage Executive should make the conditions clear. This was intimated in the King's Bench Divisonal Court, last week, in connection with the case of William Alfred Castell, a Great Finborough, Suffolk, haulier, whom Stowniarket magistrates had refused to convict on font' charges of allegedly exceeding the 25-mile limit.

It was stated that CastelTs lorry had been used to carry goods up to 80 miles for a number of companies. For the defence it was submitted that this work was covered by an R.H.E. permit,

The Lord .Chief Justice, Lord Goddard, stated that Castell's permit applied to goods carried for one particular concern. It was not surprising that the magistrates came to the decision that they did. Thee was a note irt small print on the back of the permit: it would have been quite simple to have put words on its face to say that it applied only to work for the one customer.

Lord Goddard added that the case would be sent back to the magistrates with a direction • that there was a case to answer. They might well consider, however, that an absolute discharge could be given.

B.RS. RECOVERS

RECEIPTS of British Road Services recovered in the four weeks to September 9 last, when they rose to £6,046,000, compared with €5,397,000 in the previous four. weeks. In the first 36 weeks of this year, B.R.S. revenue totalled £51,960,000.

The provincial and Scottish road passenger transport interests of the British Transport Commission yielded .€4,196,000 in the four weeks to September 9 and £30,400,000 in the first 36 weeks of the year. London Transport's revenue was £4,726,000 in the fourweek period and £40,985,000 in the 36 weeks.

DARLINGTON 'CONVERSION DELAYED

BECAUSE the Ministry of Transport has sanctioned the purchase of only 12 new buses instead of 19 as requested, the plan for the replacement of Darlington Transport Department's trolley; buses by matorbuSes is being delayed. The corporation has been informed that it will not be possible at present to complete the second stage of the scheme.
