NATIONAL BUS Company subsidiary United Counties Engineering UC's technical division, has launched a comprehensive air-conditioning installation and service maintenance service for coaches and other vehicles.

The company decided to offer the service commercially to make use of spare capacity at its Northampton central works and to meet an increasing demand from both public and private sector coach operators.

The company has trained staff in the arts of refrigeration and air-conditioning and it now can quote for fitting complete or partial Sutrak air-conditioning systems.

In addition, it is offering a Kysor product-fitting service and is becoming an authorised installer for Clarion radio and sound equipment and Webasto heating equipment.

Fitting air-conditioning and other equipment provides work for skilled tradesmen employed at Northampton. Spare capacity has developed as a result of the new workshop facilities at Milton Keynes, which are large enough to cope with the demand arising from the anticipated expansion of this new town. United Counties Engineering offers a full quotation service for individual coaches and operators. Factors such as axle weights and engine power outputs all have to be taken into consideration when specifying air-conditioning systems.

The United Counties capabilities include the design and manufacture of any equipment not included in either the coach or the air conditioning kits specification.

The facility is available to all operators including those competing with National Coach operations, and UCE has said that all customers will receive the same service with no priority being given to its own or National vehicles.

Prices for complete air-conditioning vary from vehicle to vehicle but are likely to be in the region of £7,000 for a typical British-bodied heavyweight coach.

United Counties Engineering will also install air conditioning systems on commercial .vehicles, in lorry cabs and minibuses.
