EXPERIMENTS with fare reductions carried out by Crosville Motor Services succeeded in attracting more passengers to the buses.
But, despite a 22 per cent increase in off-peak passengers, the revenue received dropped by 28 per cent.
The experiments took place in the Holywell area of Clwyd, a 50 per cent discount being given for passengers travelling between 09.30 and 15.30 and after 18.00 on Mondays to Fridays, and for all passengers at weekends.
Clwyd County Council backed Crosville against cash losses resulting from the experiment.
Clwyd's Director of Administration, Mr Mervyn Phillips, said he thought the experiment had been worthwhile, testing the commonly-held belief that reduced bus fares would offer the solution to the financial dilemma of bus operators.
