Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

An addition of a fourth console has been made by Volkswagen to the three units at present used in its test bays. This console will enable results of both visual and automatic checks of the vehicle to be recorded on a printed read-out sheet.

There. are 88 readings on the print-out sheet of which 28 are automatic and 60 are the result of the diagnosis mechanic observations.

When a vehicle is driven into the bay an umbilical cord from the computer is pushed into a test circuit socket — models being produced have a test socket and for all post 1965 VW an adaptor has been developed.

The mechanic inserts the plastic programmer card into the computer lthis program suiting model of vehicle). The diagnosis consists of visual checks for which the mechanic carries with him a manual input unit. This has three buttons, a "go" and "No go" and a "Pass on" button.

A small indicator on the manual unit indicates the next test required. No checks can be missed without the computer stopping and the computer takes over from time-to-time to complete the automatic tests.

The automatic tests include a cylinder compression check which is derived from the oil temperature and the starter motor current requirement while the engine is being cranked.

Thus a comprehensive list of checks is completed and any risk of missing a check is ruled out: a typed read-out sheet is available to assess any necessary adjustments or repairs.
