IN A major conference will be held in the Viking Hotel, York on 17 June to discuss exactly what the new Channel Tunnel means to the north of Britain.
It intends to take an objective look at the East Coast link between British Rail's well advanced East Coast Main Line electrification and the Tunnel itself. Without the "Link" this whole area of Britain may yet again miss out while the South gets all the opportunities, says the conference organiser.
Among the speakers will be David Mitchell, Minister of State for Transport; Alastair Morton, co-chairman of Eurotunnel; Malcolm Southgate, British Rail project director responsible for the Channel Tunnel; and Jean-Marie Ernecq, director of the Nord Pas de Calais Region, who will explain how the French are preparing for the Tunnel
