• Building and quarry contractor Steetly Construction Materials has switched a fifth of its 300-strong fleet from in-house operation to contract hire. The six-year deal with BRS North ern is worth 28 million. • BRS is providing 74 new vehicles: 42 3-axle 22-tonne truck mixers; five 4-axle 30-tonne mixers; and 27 4-axle 30-tonne bulk tippers — Fodens, Leylan Dafs, Mercedes-Benz and Iveco Fords. They cost a total of £3 million. All the vehicles are in Steetley's livery. BRS is providing maintenance in Yorkshire, Humberside, north east England and Thames Valley. The vehicles will move concrete, and other products, from the company's quarries to customers.
Stet1ey says the move to contract hire is unique in the quarry and construction industry. All drivers are being retained becuse Steetley says it wants to release capital invested in vehicles to use elsewhere.
